28 Inch
From WikiPedalia
There are three "28 inch" wheel sizes:
- ISO 635 mm - 28 x 1 1/2" This size is something of an antique, mainly seen on classic English Roadsters and Chinese/Indian copies.
- ISO 622 mm - 28 x [fraction] x [fraction] This is the common "700c" size used on most adult bikes other than mountain bikes and the "twenty niner" size used on mountain bikes. The 28 x [fraction] x [fraction] designation is mainly used in Germany and the Netherlands, and causes no end of confusion. Most of the rest of the world knows these by the French designation "700C"
The ISO 622 mm size is also sometimes known in Canada as 28 x 1 1 /2 F.13. - The "28 x 1 1/2" designation is also seen on ancient "single tube " tires. These are seen on bikes from the 1920s and earlier, mainly on wooden rims. They are something like tubulars, but they don't actually have tubes. They're sort of like loops of garden hose, commonly held to the rim by shellac. They could be patched only by inserting a plug from the outside. Monopolistic practices kept clincher tires from being sold in the USA, a substantial factor in the decline of cycling in the USA in the early years of the 20th Century, compared with, for example, Canada.
